Every stump in the yard is a small monthly tax. You mow around it, the kids trip over it, carpenter ants move in, and suckers sprout from the roots like the tree is plotting a comeback. Then one day you want to re-sod or put in a shed, and the stump is suddenly a real problem.
We grind stumps 8 to 12 inches below grade with a Vermeer SC30TX, deep enough to replant grass, lay pavers or pour a small slab right over the spot. Surface roots get chased as far as you want them gone. The grindings can stay as backfill mounded to settle, or we haul them and bring topsoil so the spot is flush and finished.
People ask about the difference between stump grinding and stump removal. Grinding chews the stump out and leaves the deep roots to rot harmlessly, which is right for 95 percent of yards. Full removal, digging the root ball out entirely, only makes sense when a foundation or utility trench is going exactly there. We do both, and we'll tell you plainly which one your project actually needs.
Pricing is simple: $4 to $6 per inch of diameter measured at the widest point, $150 minimum trip. Multiple stumps on one visit get a package rate, and stumps ground at the time of a tree removal are cheaper still, the machine is already there.
The SC30TX fits through a 36-inch gate. Tighter than that, we have options, but let's look at it first.
If chips are used as backfill, yes, a little, over a year or so as they break down. Topping up with soil once is normal. We can backfill with topsoil instead if you're seeding right away.
Always. We call in a locate for anything near lines, it's free and it's the law. Grinders and gas lines are a bad mix.
